Overview

In early 1980s East Berlin, painter Heiko Zolchow and actor Dirk Nawrocki fall in love. Seeking freedom, they leave the GDR for West Berlin in 1984. There, they immerse themselves in the theater scene and nightlife, forming a romantic trio with a student named Nikolaus. Meanwhile, the political systems handle the rising HIV crisis differently: East Germany suppresses information, while panic grows in the West. Just as Heiko reaches a professional peak, he receives an AIDS diagnosis. This isolates him from his children left behind in the East due to the Berlin Wall. Heiko passes away from complications in 1987. The final chapter follows his loved ones and Dirk navigating overwhelming grief, societal stigma, and the constant fear of infection. The story tracks their lives through the fall of the Wall until Dirk’s own death in 1994, capturing how the epidemic shattered their envisioned futures during a period of massive geopolitical change.
