Biography
Eliza Petrăchescu (1911–1977) was a Romanian stage and film actress, renowned especially for her powerful presence in tragic roles. She graduated from the Conservatory of Dramatic Art in Iași, where she was the favorite student of the great actress Agatha Bârsescu. Between 1929 and 1941, Petrăchescu performed in over 40 roles at the “Vasile Alecsandri” National Theatre in Iași, establishing herself as one of the most promising actresses of her generation. In 1941, she was recommended by director Ion Sava to novelist and theatre director Liviu Rebreanu at the National Theatre “I.L. Caragiale” in Bucharest. After transferring to the capital, she rose to prominence as a tragedienne, noted for her intensity, commanding voice, and emotional depth. She made her film debut in 1946 in *Pădurea îndrăgostiților* (*The Lovers’ Forest*) and continued to appear on screen for three decades. Her final film role was in 1976, when she played Profira in *Tănase Scatiu*, a historical drama adapted from Duiliu Zamfirescu’s novel. Eliza Petrăchescu died tragically on the evening of March 4, 1977, during the devastating Vrancea earthquake, which measured 7.2 on the Richter scale and struck Bucharest particularly hard. She was at home when the earthquake caused her residential building to collapse. The disaster claimed over 1,500 lives in Romania, including many artists and cultural figures. Her sudden death marked the loss of one of the country’s most distinguished stage actresses, whose career had spanned nearly five decades.
